Winter Storm Watch for areas north and west of Lynchburg for Sunday…
Clear tonight, then sunshine fades behind increasing clouds late Saturday afternoon.
The long awaited storm approaches early Sunday morning. In most locations, the precipitation starts as rain, then mixes with some sleet before changing over to all snow for the afternoon. Snow will be heavy in some places late Sunday afternoon and evening before coming to an end later Sunday night.
Accumulations will vary tremendously across the area, with higher amounts north and west of Lynchburg. Lower amounts south and east. Initial forecast amounts:
Lexington-Lovingston: 5-9"
Roanoke-Lynchburg: 2-5"
Southside Virginia: 1-2"
With the ground starting so mild on Sunday morning, travel conditions are expected to be largely unaffected until after midday Sunday, then snow will begin to accumulate more quickly toward dusk Sunday and into the evening. All precipitation ends later Sunday night, leaving a sunny and chilly Monday in its wake.
Small changes in conditions leading into Saturday evening will have a large impact on the storm Sunday. Be sure and stay with ABC13 on air and on line for updates as the storm approaches, as modifications of the current forecast are expected.
