Roanoke Co., VA - A Roanoke County official says a 12-year-old girl missing for one week has been found safe.
Teresa Hamilton Hall said 12-year-old Brittany Mae Smith was found Friday, and 32-year-old Jeffrey Scott Easley is in custody. He had been the boyfriend of Brittany's mother, who was found dead on Monday.
During the 8 p.m. press conference, police said that Easley and Smith were spotted at a retail store in San Francisco, California. They say someone called the San Francisco Police Department to report it and police found them a short time later. They say they were in a tent not far from the store.
Smith is fine and talking to officers. Roanoke police are working to book a flight now to California to speak with Easley and Smith. Then they plan to accompany Smith back home to Roanoke.
The police have not found the Dodge Neon they say Easley was driving. They are working still to locate that car. Police also say they are questioning Easley at this time.
