For anyone who knows me they are aware that one of my passions is Maryland basketball. We got great news this week when our star guard Greivis Vasquez announced he was returning for his senior season with the Terps.
North Carolina fans out there might remember, Vasquez was the one who dropped a triple-double on the Heels en route to one of their only losses of the season. With Vazquez back, our starting line-up looks like Adrian Bowie at the point (returning starter), Sean Mosley at shooting guard (also a returning starter), Vazquez at a third guard spot, Landon Milborne (returning starter) and the center's spot will likely go to one of our incoming freshmen.
You'll probably see it go to Jordan Williams, a 6'10 beast out of Connecticut. Just type his name into YouTube and you can see him shatter a backboard during a dunk last year in a high school game. He's still a raw prospect but he has tons of potential. And Gary Williams is a master of molding guys like that into superstars.
Anyone remember Lonnie Baxter or Joe Smith or Ryan Randle or Tahj Holden or Bambale Osby or even Jamar Smith? They were all former Terps big men who came to the school with little or no hype and became solid contributors. Let's hope Gary can work that magic again with Williams and fellow freshman James Padgett from Brooklyn, New York. He's 6'9 and should contribute immediately.
I didn't even mention our STRONG group of guys coming off of the bench. Led by guard Eric Hayes, forwards Cliff Tucker and Jin Soo Kim and big men Dino Gregory (one of my favorites) and Jerome Burney. The bottom line is. this team should be head and shoulders above last year's squad, which advanced to the NCAA Tournament and even won a first-round game. Look for the Terps to be near the top of the ACC (our rightful place) this year and poised for a deep run in the Big Dance. It should be a fun year and I will be there the whole way shouting "Go Maryland!"
