Carter's Call for April 22, 2009
category: Carter's Call

With the temperatures predicted to soar into the 80's this weekend, it should be a great opportunity to catch some outdoor sporting events in the area. And you've got plenty of choices!

Football fans can take in the Virginia Tech spring game Saturday the 25th at 2:00 in Lane Stadium. The ODAC Baseball Tournament is this weekend at Lynchburg City Stadium, the ODAC Softball Tournament takes place in Salem. And don't forget the country's top anglers converging on Smith Mountain Lake for the Bassmaster Elite Series Blue Ridge Brawl.  Take your pick!

Odds & Ends:
What's up with Dale Earnhardt, Jr? I know we're still very early in the season, but the 88 has really struggled out of the gates, 19th in points. His teammates are running strong, Gordon, Johnson and Martin have all won races, so when will Junior come around?

Congrats to LU's Megan Frazee, Big South Player of the Year two years running, Big South Scholar Athlete of the Year and now WNBA bound, picked 14th overall by San Antonio. Couldn't have happened to a nicer young lady. We're gonna miss covering the Frazee triplets next year!

After making some early college visits with my wife and son last week, here are some SURE signs you're not as young as you used to be.

    1. The girls sunbathing on college campuses that you used to ogle as a student (and still do as an adult) are now just a few years older than your son...OUCH!
    2.  Everybody calls you "sir." I know it's using good manners which I appreciate, but I still feel younger than a "sir."
      Wishful thinking on my part.
    3. Thinking events happened maybe 15 years ago that in actuality took place more than 30 years ago. Case in point, when former Tigers pitcher Mark Fidrych passed last week. I was stunned when I realized it's been 33 years since "The Bird" was the craze, 1976.

So yes, I've come to the realization that I am getting old. All I know is time really does fly when you're having a good time. Dennis

Good Morning Dennis:

Trying to get some love for the JF boys varsity soccer team. Last evening at Brookville the JV Varsity Soccer ran their win streak to 8-0 with a score of 5-2. The first meeting had ended in a 1-0 win for JF in the second overtime period. This was an extremely well played game of high quality. The JF defense, led by senior goalkeeper Blake Hubbard have only given up 3 goals this season on their way to an 8-0 start. This week will be a major test as the Cavalies will host four teams for matches:

Monday evening vs. Cave Springs @ 7:30pm Tuesday evening vs. Amherst @ 6:30pm Friday evening vs. Rustburg @ 6:30pm Saturday evening vs.Abermarle @ 6:30pm

All four games are preceded by JV matches and is wonderful entertainment for just $4.00

Thanks for any coverage you can provide. The Cave Spring and Albermarle will be high quality high school soccer.
