Taking the Plunge- by Shane Butler

As the mid Spring temperatures continue to slowly warm, a lot of us start thinking about taking a plunge in our favorite watering hole. For many this source of cooling off is Smith Mountain Lake. Some call it the jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains and rightly so with its 500 miles of shoreline and beautiful terrain surrounding it.

The lake has become one of my favorite designations during the warm season and I look forward to spending time on it every year. Last weekend, I helped a friend cut grass and weed eat around his cabin. We were getting the place ready for the approaching Memorial Day weekend which is sorta considered the unofficial start to the Summer season.

Temperatures were in the 80s making it a bit uncomfortable but I knew the refreshing water of the lake was just feet away from me. After a few hours of working, I could take no more and decided I needed to take the plunge. It's that moment of truth when you have to decide, do you put your foot in first to test the water or do you just take a leap of faith. I would like to say I just took off running and accepted my fate but I can't. I dipped the foot in briefly then thought "what the heck" and took the plunge. I've been in colder water but this leap did take my breathe away for a brief moment.

In case you're wondering the lakes water temperature is around 69 degrees. That's a bit too cool for me but it will refresh you on a hot May afternoon. I usually don't hit the water until June and even then I'm little hesitant about getting into the water. Unfortunately for me and the rest of you who like the water in the upper 70s to lower 80s, it may be a while longer before we see that happen.

Looks like water temperatures will fluctuate with upper 60s and lower 70s common through the rest of this week and next. The weather pattern remains active, so I don't see an extended period of hot and dry days allowing the lake to really warm any faster. Hope to see yah on the lake sometime this season.
