    Lynchburg - Heritage ran its record to 3-and-0 on the season, blanking Staunton River 3-0 in high school volleyball Tuesday night at Heritage.Sophomore Brittany Cobbs had a big game for the Pioneers, delivering nine kills and three blocks. Senior Julia Hicks added six aces and 13 assists, senior Chyna Carter 20 digs as the Pioneers stayed unbeaten on the young season.

    Lynchburg - Liberty and Norfolk State both look to bounce back from season-opening losses to nationally-ranked opponents when they face off Saturday at 4 in Norfolk. Turnovers killed LU in the loss at Carolina. SIX of 'em helped lead to 56 points for the Tar Heels. Flames redshirt freshman Todd Macon ran for 67 yards and two TDs in his first college game, earning Big South Freshman of the Week honors.

    Amherst County - Luray's Jacob Moyer ran for three first-half touchdowns and the Bulldogs scored on every offensive possession in the first half as they rolled to a 46-0 season-opening win over Nelson County.  Luray ran up a 33-0 lead at the half to put the game away early.  Moyer scored the Bulldogs' first touchdown on a 62-yard romp less than four minutes into the game, then scored again four minutes later from 27 yards out.

Also playing for Ivy Hill were Helen Ferneyhough, Linda Mason, Teresa Hudson, Erica Bottoms and Edie Moran.

    Chapel Hill, NC - North Carolina coach Larry Fedora has suspended four players for Saturday's game against Liberty, a day after a report of an alleged hazing altercation left a walk-on with a possible concussion.  Fedora said only that the players were suspended for a violation of team policy. Starting cornerbacks Des Lawrence and Brian Walker were two of the four suspended, freshmen Donnie Miles and M.J. Stewart the other two.

    Blacksburg - Virginia Tech Director of Athletics Whit Babcock announced a two-year contract extension Wednesday for Hokies head football coach Frank Beamer.The extension is through January 1st of 2019 for Beamer, who's beginning his 28th season. Babcock says announcing before the home opener serves as a tangible show of support for the winningest coach in college football who does it the right way. Babcock says Beamer's integrity and work ethic are even better than advertised.

    Martinsville - Hendrick Motorsports Cup drivers got in some short track testing Tuesday and Wednesday at Martinsville Speedway. Sprint Cup points leader Jeff Gordon and teammates Dale Earnhardt, Junior, Jimmie Johnson and Kasey Kahne all turned laps on the half-mile oval in preparation for the Goody's 500 in late October.  Gordon and Johnson have each won Martinsville EIGHT times, but practice is still a big deal.

    Lynchburg - Former Liberty Flame Ryan Cordell hit not one but two home runs Monday night to power Myrtle Beach past the Hillcats 10-4. Cordell blasted a two-run shot in the third and another in the ninth as part of a 3-for-5 night at the plate, driving in five runs. Jose Martinez and Johan Camargo had two hits each for the Hillcats, Camargo hit his first ever-homer in the United States, but the Pelicans earn a 4-game series split in the Hillcats' final home game of the regular season.
