  • Full Court Press High School Basketball Scores - Feb. 21 Boys Scores: Rustburg 53, Northside 51 Heritage 76, Harrisonburg 68 (OT) Dan River 55, Clarke County 33 William Campbell 63, Altavista 34
  • Blacksburg - Mike Scott scored 20 points and Sammy Zeglinski had 13, all in the second half, and No. 25 Virginia hung on to beat Virginia Tech 61-59 Tuesday night. For the second game in a row, the Cavaliers
  • Tuesday night was a big night for the Heritage and Rustburg girls and boys basketball teams. All four teams won their first-round regional games to advance to region semifinal action. 
  • Lynchburg - Junior Colton Hunt poured in a game-high 26 points to lead Randolph to a 69-62 win over Roanoke in round one of the ODAC Tournament. With the victory, Randolph (13-13) advances to play No. 3 Guilford in the tournament quarterfinals Friday night at 8.
  • Area Scores - Monday, Feb. 20 Men's College Basketball: Norfolk State 66, Longwood 52 (Longwood's Antwan Carter scored 19 points, becoming the school's all-time scoring leader now at 1808 points. )  Rust College of Mississippi beat Virginia University of Lynchburg 104-97.

    The Longwood women beat Gardner-Webb 76-65.

    Lynchburg - Liberty Flames righthander John Niggli is the Big South Pitcher of the Week for games played this past weekend. Niggli scattered four hits over six-plus innings in LU's 12-0 season-opening win over Richmond.  The Flames are 4-and-0 heading into Wednesday's home opener against Radford.
  • The ACC has publicly reprimanded official Karl Hess for failing to follow procedure when ejecting two former N.C. State stars from the stands in Saturday's loss to Florida State in Raleigh. 
  • Blacksburg - It's the rematch Tuesday night in Blacksburg as the Hokies host arch-rival UVa. Game time 9 o'clock in Cassell Coliseum. The Hokies won the first meeting in Charlottesville 47-45.
  • Reporter: Dennis Carter Lynchburg - The ODAC Men's Tournament tips off Tuesday night. On the men's side, one of the first-round games pits Roanoke at Randolph.  The two teams split during the regular season with both winning on the other's home court.

  • Tallahassee, FL - The Hokies blew a 15-point second half lead, and 20th-ranked Florida State nailed a three with two seconds left to beat Virginia Tech 48-47 Thursday night in Tallahassee. 
  • Reporter: Dennis Carter Lynchburg - High school boys action at L.C.A., the Bulldogs took Miller School out of Albemarle to overtime before Miller prevailed 58-53. With the Bulldogs down 3, 13 seconds left, L.C.A.'s Matt Moats buried a three that forced overtime before Miller goes on to win.
  • Reporter: Dennis Carter Campbell County - Thursday morning at Brookville, Bees receiver Guy Morris off of this year's state championship team signed his college letter-of-intent. Morris will play for Division Two Alderson-Broaddus in West Virginia.

  • Lynchburg - Lynchburg College led ODAC leader and number 3 in the country Virginia Wesleyan for much of the game last night at L.C. The Hornets' Andrew Simmons even hit a shot from beyond midcourt before the final buzzer that would have won the game.  But Lynchburg had called a timeout just before the shot.  Virginia Wesleyan won the game in overtime 73-62.

     

     
  • Reporter: Dennis Carter The Seminole District Tournament boys and girls championship games are set for Friday night at Heritage High School. Wednesday night's boys action, Amherst County beat Heritage while Rustburg defeated Brookville.  In the girls semis, Brookville won over Rustburg, Heritage beat JF.  So it's Brookville and Heritage Friday night for the girls title.

  • Lynchburg - Girls action at V.E.S., the Bishops hosted the Carlisle Chiefs out of Martinsville. Carlisle took control of this one early, Kindall Allred buried two of her nine points. Maggie Moomaw had 23 for V.E.S., but the Bishops fall to Carlisle 71-36.  Courtney Puckett led the Chiefs with 28.
  • North Charleston, SC - Antwan Burrus heaved in a long 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Liberty a thrilling 75-74 win on the road at Charleston Southern. 
  • Reporter: Dennis Carter Rustburg - Virginia Tech-bound Marshall Wood poured in a game-high 31 points to power Rustburg to a hard-fought 51-46 win over E.C. Glass. 
  • WSET ABC 13 announced today it has reached an agreement to broadcast all Virginia High School League state final games in basketball.
  • Chapel Hill - Freshman Austin Rivers buried a 3-pointer at the horn to give No. 10 Duke an 85-84 win over No. 5 North Carolina on Wednesday night. Rivers scored a season-high 29 points and hit six 3's.
  • Charlottesville - Senior forward Mike Scott made all nine of his field goal attempts and scored a game-high 19 points to lead Virginia to a lopsided 68-44 ACC win over Wake Forest Wednesday night in Charlottesville.

A weak disturbance passes through the state this evening, producing occasional showers.  While most will be light, a brief heavier downpour or thundershower is also possible.  Temperatures will hold in the 40s overnight. 

Thursday will be warm and breezy with highs soaring into the upper 60s, but then the colder air will begin to seep in on Friday.  After a few showers Friday morning, winds turn from the northwest, holding the afternoon temperatures near 60 degrees. 

Colder this weekend. Windy with more clouds than sun on Saturday and highs near 40.  Sunday will be the sunnier, less windy, and milder day this weekend with highs in the upper 40s. 

Expect another chance at soaking rain late Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.
