Recount a Possibility in 5th District
Across the ABC 13 Viewing Area - 31 votes - that's all that separates the candidates in the 5th District Congressional race. Tom Perriello has the lead, but 28 hours after the polls closed, we still don't know the official winner. Supporters of both Virgil Goode and Tom Perriello are waiting until every last vote is counted.

A night of ups and downs has spilled over into day as the numbers in the 5th District Congressional race just keep changing. Watching the results was much like watching the stock market - the numbers in both columns went up and down.

The numbers in the 5th District Race were up and down all night and part of the confusion came from a computer glitch in Danville that messed up the registrar's totals. We spoke with the registrar and the State Board of Elections.

Numbers from the State Board of Elections show voter turnout jumped across our viewing area from the last presidential election. Turnout climbed four percentage points here in Lynchburg from 69 percent to 73.

While John McCain didn't win the election, he did carry Lynchburg by 1,300 votes, largely thanks to one precinct. Heritage Elementary is, of course, where Liberty students voted.
