Campbell Co., VA - Police are looking into a hunting accident that killed an Appomattox County man Saturday afternoon. Conservation Police say about eight people were hunting together off East Ferry Road in the Gladys area of Campbell County when it happened.
They tell us an 18-year-old thought he was shooting a deer, but instead shot 28-year-old Benjamin Lee Mawyer. Emergency workers say a buckshot pellet hit him in the head. They pronounced him dead at the scene.
Police say both men were wearing blaze orange for safety, but the area is known for its thick woods. They're not releasing the shooter's name and there's no word on charges, if any, at this point.
