Danville, VA - It's no secret, the economy is in a huge slump. And research shows, when the economy takes a hit, so do we. Crime goes up -- robberies, burglaries. But these tough times mean increased sales for one local business. Home security system stores are doing really well right now.
People may be pinching pennies, but not when it comes to protecting their homes. The Wallers can't imagine life without it.
Marvin Waller, Has Security System - "Going out of town, we just don't worry about it. We just go ahead on."
That's because they have a security system protecting their home. Their neighbors have had more reason to worry.
Marvin - "It's been so many break-ins round in this area."
It's the reason one expert we spoke with says so many people turn to home security systems.
Mark Matherly, Security Zone - "Some people have actually experienced a break-in or a robbery, some people are just concerned because they are aware of the fact that there's been an increase in break-in activity and want to head it off before they get hit."
Especially, in a time like this. He says with the economy down, his sales are up.
Matherly - "We've had almost a 50% increase on people calling us and coming in to look at systems for their homes."
The Wallers' neighborhood is a good example.
Marvin - "It's been more security systems put in."
Carolyn Waller, Has Security System - "I think we've had t least 5."
And since then?
Carolyn - "It sure did stop."
We're told having a security system will decrease your chances of having a home invasion by about 70%. Systems will run you somewhere between $500 to $2,000.
