In this week’s Health Check -- treating tinnitus. It's commonly known as ringing in the ears. While tinnitus can be debilitating enough to send many to the doctor, a large number just live with it, assuming it's in their heads. But audiologists say the problem is very real and can be easy to treat. Audiologist Richard Tyler says there is no cure, but there are strategies that can help with symptoms like hearing loss.
Richard Tyler, Audiologist - "Even if that is making sure you're watching someone's face when they are speaking, to make sure that you're moving away from the noise source or turn a noise source down."
Tyler also teaches patients to stay busy, and keep a low level sound constant. For people with extreme cases, depression and anxiety medications can help. So have Cochlear implants and hearing aids.
