Whenever we talk about snow, lots of people think about skiing. And with skiing, often comes injuries. But doctors say most of them are preventable. Strengthening and stretching reduce the chances of injury. Doctors say drinking water, avoiding alcohol, wearing sunscreen, sunglasses and a helmet do, too. Still, one of the most common winter sports injuries on the mountain can happen just walking.
Dr. Eric McCarty, Orthopedic surgeon - "The ACL is the big ligament right here in the middle of the knee. It helps the knee from twisting and going out of place."
A torn ACL requires a minimum of 6 months recovery. Doctors say it's far easier to avoid injury in the first place by being in shape.
