We're only two weeks into the spring fire season and Virginia Forestry officials are out of money. They say the recent rash of forest fires burned right through their budget. Now they are getting ready to ask the state for more money for the rest of the fiscal year. We've already seen almost 500 forest fires here in Virginia, since January. For the forestry department, that means helping local agencies with firefighting, and equipment like bulldozers and helicopters. It adds up to about half a million dollars.
Workers say the wind swept through one day earlier this month and fires soon overwhelmed them.
Jim Jarvis, Forester - "It was pretty crazy. That particular day was a record setting day. We were in a prolonged drought, not a lot of relief from that. Humidity was low, wind was very high."
Forestry officials want everyone to remember fire season is underway. That means no open fires before 4:00pm.
