Danville, VA -
It's a holiday for romance and sentiment. Whether you say it with diamonds, flowers, or chocolate, it often means spending. But this year, we wanted to know, if the economy is changing the way we say "I care?"
There are plenty of ways to say it, the problem is doing it for the right price.
Helena Richardson, Shopper - "People just don't have the money to buy a lot of expensive things for this year's gifts."
The shoppers we spoke with, say love is cheap this year and they're going back to basics. Richardson - "Saying I love you with only a card, but showing it in a greater way."
Terri Oakes, Shopper - "You can do things that are free."
And free feels good these days. Some couldn't resist the classics, but decided to go with less expensive versions this year.
Patty Edmunds, Shopper - "The cheaper hearts are going a lot quicker now than the expensive ones!"
So we had to know, with Valentines on a budget, is there still romance in that?
Sonja Blackstock, Shopper - "You can make love, out of just being together."
And in this economy, shoppers say, that'll have to do. Many of the people we spoke with say, in the name of savings, they may get creative this year. They're planning to make their own cards, and spend time together, instead of money.
