Amherst Co., VA -
Now that the close to $800 billion stimulus package has passed, what's next? Associate professor of economics at Sweet Briar (web) College, Eugene Gotwalk, says those who are still out of work will benefit from an extension of unemployment benefits, probably right away.
In a few weeks, taxpayers will probably notice a little less money taken out of each paycheck. But Gotwalk says it will take at least a year for Congress to go through the political process to dole out the money to the states and then for the states to start that same process.
Eugene Gotwalt, Sweet Briar College - "I think we saw that with the tobacco settlement, all the money went to the states and it took them years to decide, okay, let's spend it on this policy, let's spend it on this program."
Gotwalk says it will take years for us to pay back that $800 billion.
