Five months out of every year, the Lancer football team is the talk of Amherst County. Coming off two consecutive state titles, they've had plenty to talk about. Now, in the off-season, there's a new topic and it's not something anyone expected to deal with.
The team's coach has decided to leave and take his winning ways up the road. It won't be official until Thursday night, but head coach Scott Abell says he will turn in his resignation at the school board meeting and take on a new position as offensive coordinator at Washington and Lee University. Abell joined Amherst County from Liberty High School back in 2002. After finishing 5-5 in his first year with the Lancers, he went on to amass a 60-and-12 record including state championships in 2006 an 2007. Abell tells me he didn't seek out the new job in Lexington, but he's excited about what it'll mean for him and his family. He says he began telling his players Tuesday and that's probably the most difficult thing he's had to do. Scott Abell, Resigning as Amherst Football Coach - "They were very mature about it and understood that this is a great opportunity for me, and they wished me well, and vice versa. There were some tears shed, and a lot of hugs, but that all means that we truly care about one another and that relationship will continue." Coach Abell takes over an offense that led Washington and Lee to a 6-and-3 record last year, but finished fifth in the conference for scoring.
