Part of Route 29 was shut down for about an hour Monday because of a house fire just north of Altavista. When firefighters got there around 11:30 they say smoke was coming from the chimney.
Thing is -- the chimneys in the house aren't functional. Investigators believe the fire started in the kitchen but don't know how it started quite yet. A couple and their two dogs are going to have to find another place to stay.
Aleli Sciuto, House Caught Fire - "One lady pulled me in and said 'oh your chimney's burning' and I said 'I don't have chimney' and I tried to go in there but I can't."
Jason Stroud, Campbell Co. Public Safety -"They were fortunate, being on a busy road like this, they were fortunate the fire department got here pretty quickly and were able to get water on the fire pretty quickly."
There were about 10 cats in the house as well. Fire and EMS crews don't know, right now, how many of them survived.
