We begin with new information on the sniper-style shootings overnight, along I-64. State Police wonder if shots fired in Waynesboro could somehow be connected. They're now reviewing surveillance video from a credit union.
Waynesboro Police say someone opened fire there around 12:30 Thursday morning. According to NBC 29 in Charlottesville, the bullets hit the window and part of the bank's building and a white van parked in the lot. Police are looking for an older model, light-colored AMC Gremlin with a dark strip running down its side, which was caught on that surveillance video.
The shootings along I-64 happened a short time later. At least five vehicles were hit. Two drivers ended up in the hospital with minor injuries. Investigators say they're looking for two possible suspects and say they've identified three different spots where those shots were fired.
Troopers have increased patrols along that stretch of I-64, a stretch many drivers say they're worried about using. We have more on the evidence being looked at and peoples' fears of snipers on the loose.
Today was all about processing the crime scenes, like this overpass on Route 690, but now the attention turns to safety, making sure there's no repeat of last night.
Col. Steve Flaherty, VA State Police Supt. - "We haven't identified any motive for what may have occurred so we all need to be cautious."
And that includes the State Police, who will be out tonight in force.
Col. Flaherty - "Well we are certainly going to put additional resources out."
That's welcome news for many nervous drivers.
Maggie Walkup, Driving to West Virginia - "Ahh yeah, very nervous. It's very frightening, I can't even believe, why would somebody even try to do something like that, it's terrible."
Investigators say they believe the suspects are probably still in the area. They're continuing to look into reports of suspicious vehicles.
Col. Flaherty - "People are really trying to help us and they are calling in any idea that they have, so we are getting multiple vehicles that, most of which are probably not what we are looking for."
Now as we first reported earlier, a source close to the investigation has told ABC-13 that casings of .22 Magnum rounds were found near one of the shooting locations. In case you are wondering, this is a .22 Magnum round, it is very small but still very capable of inflicting some of the damage we've seen during this shooting. We will bring you any updates on this story, as they become available.
