It's been a most unusual couple of days for some Amherst County 7th graders. The entire boys’ Health and Phys Ed class at Monelison Middle had a day at the fishing hole. Their teacher applied for a grant to cover the trip and all the equipment.

It's going to leave these kids with some great stories to tell. Who wouldn't trade a day in the classroom for a day like this?

"Take the button like this then just press the button and swing it out."

Noreen - "Have you ever been fishing before?"

Chris Taylor - "No ma'am."

Noreen - "What do you think?"

Chris - "It's real good. Other people should go fishing it's real fun, yep real fun."

Steve Roberts - "All right Deon, if I get a fish first you gotta swim across the other side!"

When Steve Roberts applied for a grant from the Future Fisherman's Foundation, he never believed they'd actually get it. But he really hoped they would.

Steve Roberts, Health/P.E. Teacher - "It's something we can do to get the kids active. Not all kids want to play a game that involves a ball and not all kids are competitive."

Unfortunately, the fish didn't want to play this game either.

Noreen - "Have you caught any fish yet?

Deon Holmes - "Nope. No fish at all."

But a few had some luck.

Noreen - "It was like that?"

Jesse Best - "Yes ma'am it was a little Crappie. Well a big Crappie."

They had spent a week and a half in the classroom learning the ropes.

Chris - "They taught us how to put the bait on and the bobbers and the hooks and tie the knots."

In this outdoor classroom, they learned how to untie them.

"This is really tangled!"

They split the class between Wednesday and Thursday at Mill Creek Park... and now that the grant has bought the equipment, they'll do it for years to come. Incidentally they believe they're the only school in Virginia to get the grant.

This was a great idea, but what they didn't mention was that the girls gym classes went to Izaak Walton Lake and ran, played volleyball, soccer, archery, etc and came home barely alive.

And what about the girls who aren't interested in sports and being competative - do we have an alternative for them???
