They came from North Carolina, West Virginia and Maryland to buy honeybees in Lynchburg. It happens only one day a year at Dadant Beekeeping Supply Store. The shop gets in a shipment of honeybees packaged in three-pound boxes.
Each box holds between five-and-six thousand bees. This year, the shop ordered 650 boxes, which adds up to about three-and-a-half million bees. It's their biggest order ever, to make up for record losses due to the still-unexplained Colony Collapse Disorder.
Larry Oxner, Appomattox Beekeeper - "People that have kept bees are getting back into it or either increasing the number of bees they got or trying to build up where they have lost bees, it's a real big demand this year."
Each box of bees costs $72. Monday's buyers included professional beekeepers and hobbyists.
