Friday morning's Midwestern earthquake surprised these anchors on a Louisville, Kentucky, morning show. The 5.2 magnitude quake is the strongest the region has seen in 40 years.
"All right we are experiencing some shaking here in the studio, perhaps a tremor of some sort we aren't sure - the whole studio is shaking."
The tremor was centered near West Salem, Illinois, but could be felt for hundreds of miles, across several states. This video is out of Mount Carmel, Illinois - at a convenience store about five miles from the epicenter. Plenty of damage, but no injuries to report.
Here in Central Virginia -- you might not have felt the quakes, but an area seismologist picked them up. Randolph College (web) 's seismograph registered the quake. They have a seismograph out at their riding center on Coffee Road.
As for any displacement the Midwest quakes could have caused here, Randolph College's seismologist says very little.
Dr. Tatiana Toteva - "This is an earthquake that is happening on a totally different fault zone there is no reason to consider that there will be any activity here because of that earthquake. From my point of view it's a great resource for education."
That seismograph is sponsored by Virginia Tech. All readings are saved in their quake database and used for research on how and why earthquakes happen.
