On this Earth Day, two large parts of our region are now protected forever from development. Roanoke City (web) Council has voted to put more than 6,000 acres of Carvin’s Cove into a conservation easement. That's about half the Cove.
This follows Monday's announcement that about 5,000 acres at Smith Mountain Lake will also be under easement. The Carvin’s Cove easement is the largest ever recorded in the Commonwealth, a feat that's taken more than a decade to achieve.
Roger Holnback, Western VA Land Trust - "That easement runs forever and future city councils cannot change their minds about the uses of Carvin’s Cove. So Carvin’s Cove is a resource for our community for recreation, as a natural place, as a protection of our water supply is now protected."
The Western Virginia Land Trust hopes to see the other half of the Cove put into easement in the next year.
