Lynchburg Police (web) have arrested a teenager they say set a fire at his own school, forcing the evacuations of hundreds of students. It was actually the second fire of the day at Heritage High School, both set in trash cans inside the school.
The fire marshal says they were intentionally set. Heritage's School Resource Officer found both fires and put them out. The second started around 2:00pm in a boy's bathroom. The officer called the fire department and evacuated the school, then reviewed surveillance video.
Students we spoke with are glad someone has been caught, they say it could have been worse.
Alante Callands, Student - "For the simple fact that somebody would stoop that low and try to set a fire and burn the school. That's, like, it's not even called for."
One student had to be taken to the hospital after the smoke aggravated her asthma, but overall no one was hurt. School will start as usual Thursday.
