Drowning at Smith Mountain Lake

A 72-year-old Union Hall man is dead this evening after he drowned at Smith Mountain Lake.
The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries says around 7:30 Wednesday night they were called to the lake for what they thought was a boating accident.
Instead, they found James Millard Hankla dead. Franklin County says his death was not the result of a boating accident.
They say his death appears accidental, and are waiting on autopsy results.
