After a long journey from Salem to Myrtle Beach to Kinston, the Hillcats returned to City Stadium Monday night. Top 7, Myrtle Beach up 7-to-1. Blair Johnson gave up a homer in the 6th but here he strikes out Brandon Powell and Powell takes it out on his bat - snapping the handle, tough night, going 0-for-5.
Top 8, Jacob Huffman now on the mound for the Cats, this one gets away, a run scores and the Pelicans' lead is now 8-1. Bottom 8, Lynchburg was still looking for its first homer at home - not anymore. Steve Lerud makes up for the passed ball with a bomb to right center, his 4th on the year. The 3-run blast makes it 8-4.
Bottom 9, down 8-6 with two outs, Kent Sakamoto sends a hard shot in the hole at short. The throw gets past the first baseman. Angel Gonzalez comes in from third but the rally ended there. Myrtle Beach takes game one 8-7.
In Salem, the Avalanche also back home after a long road trip. Kinston, though, takes game one from the Avs 10-5.
