The Hillcats had lost two straight to Myrtle Beach entering Wednesday night, hoping to stop the skid. The Carolina League's top hitter, Lynchburg's Jim Negrych had another strong night at the plate, 2-for-3, to up his season average to an even .400.
After singling in the fifth, Negrych then stole second and third on consecutive pitches in the fourth as the balls went in the dirt. He would score on Kent Sakamoto's sac fly, Sakamoto's 16th RBI of the season to make it 3-1 Lynchburg. The 'Cats' Tony Watson allowed just one run over 5-and-two-thirds to pick up the win. Hillcats hang on to beat the Pelicans 3-2.
The Salem Avalanche also a winner at home. David Qualben allowed just two hits over seven innings, the Avs shut out Kinston 5-0.
