Lynchburg, VA - After more than a decade in Lynchburg, Planned Parenthood is closing the doors of its McConville Road health center. Officials say this is going to be a loss for the community, but some people in Lynchburg say the area can do without.
Planned Parenthood provides emergency contraception and birth control to women, men and teens. They also test for STD’s. They'll stop serving patients at their Lynchburg facility on June 22nd. Planned Parenthood blames a lack of donations in the sluggish economy.
Some say young people who can't get help from parents on sex are losing a valuable resource, while others don't approve of an organization that provides women with consultations on abortions. Geraldine Spinner, who is in favor of Planned Parenthood, said, "Some parents, they don't know how to come about talking to them about it, then you've got some girls who are afraid to go to their parents. So they've got somewhere to go."
Heather Bowling disagreed. "Providing them condoms and the safe sex stuff is great, but if they go along the lines of providing a means to an end for the fetus then I don't think it's worth it to have it around," she said.
Planned Parenthood says they never performed a single abortion at their Lynchburg facility.
