A Danville family is still reeling from a fire that destroyed their home Thursday morning. Thankfully no one was hurt - as firefighters took on flames 30-feet-tall. A police officer says he saw those flames almost a mile away.
Dolly Carter, Lost Everything in Fire - "The reality of it is, we have to start over, from scratch."
The big question of the morning though -- was anyone home at the time. A family of six did live at the home on Worsham Street, but thankfully they were not here when this happened. Because this damage is extremely heavy and the blaze spread quickly causing the roof and the second floor to collapse.
It all happened in a matter of minutes. The call came in just before 4:00. 20 firefighters had everything pretty much under control by 4:20 or so. But by then, the house was a total loss.
The Fire Marshal still isn't sure how it started yet. Dolly Carter and her five children used to live here. She says this is devastating, since she doesn't have any homeowner's insurance. Carter hopes this will convince others to be prepared.
Carter - "It's a blessing that nobody was there to be hurt, and I take comfort in that. But there's a reality of it, of what really is lost too."
The house next door was damaged by smoke. That family can't stay there for a while. Money from Danville Burn Fund will help both families.
Donations can be dropped off at any Danville First Citizens Bank. Make checks out to DBF, and earmark to which fire victim you would like the money to go to. Donations tax-deductible.
