Fire investigators think they've solved a mystery fire that led to the collapse of the Fort Avenue Bridge. A warrant was served to the home of Donald Payne.
An eyewitness told investigators Payne accidentally set the bridge on fire in the early hours of April 16th, while trying to keep warm. They also say, Payne ran after he realized the fire had spread and done so much damage. Now he's charged with malicious setting of a fire.
Greg Wormser, Lynchburg Fire Dept. - "It was certainly an accident, at least that's our belief at this point. We don't believe that he set the fire with the intent to burn the bridge down or harm anybody but it is something that got out of hand."
Payne has a home of his own, but we're told he frequently visited homeless friends that lived under that bridge. Payne could face up to five years in prison.
