Many say they feel forgotten. Senior citizens in Altavista could soon need a new meeting spot. Campbell County is looking to possibly close the Altavista Armory. The state owns it, but the County foots the maintenance bill. It's a bill that's adding up.

Decades of memories -- all events for the Altavista Friendship Center at the Armory.

Myrtle Price, Altavista Friendship Center - "We only have this."

Each Monday about forty seniors meet there.

Price - "This is just the perfect place for all of our activities."

And the same is true for the Central Virginia Area Agency on Aging.

Martha Brown, Central Virginia Area Agency on Aging - "All of this is for senior citizens. My youngest is 68 and my oldest is 93."

Martha Brown teaches nutrition to the elderly at the Armory.

Brown - "It gives them something to do and it's good for them."

The County agrees. But they say the Armory isn't up to snuff.

Sherry Harding, Director of Programming - "Our priority is to make sure these seniors have a safe and adequate place that they can meet."

The Armory is getting old. Because it's state-owned, the County has little motivation to fix it.

Harding - "Whether the county chooses to stay at the Armory or whether we look at other options, we would still keep that center and keep it healthy and active."

Seniors say the building needs work, but they need a building. Be it the Armory or somewhere else. Price - "I mean don't forget us senior citizens!"

The Board of Supervisors will decide the Armory's fate. That will happen May 19th. Until then, the County is looking for other facilities for the senior programs.
