State Police were on the scene of a Thursday morning school bus wreck in Charlotte County. The driver is dead, but all the children seem to be okay. Police say the driver had some kind of issue just before the wreck.
State Police tell us Phyllis Pollard was driving east on Route 40 when students saw her slump over the wheel and then she hit a tree. That was around 8:15am. Police believe Pollard had some medical condition, she was alive when police arrived, but was pronounced dead at Lynchburg General.
32 Central middle school students were on this bus -- seven were taken to the hospital, they are okay. There' a home across the street from where the bus crashed. The owners say they heard it happen.
Brenda Vassar, Heard the Crash - "I heard a loud boom, just like an explosion, and when I came out of my kitchen door I saw the bus just like you see it now except children, students, were already starting to get out of the back door."
And this homeowner says the students were all taking care of each other.
The bus driver, Phyllis Pollard was in her 50s. Police are looking into her cause of death. We’re told she had been driving for Charlotte County schools for about eight years.
