Why did she slump over the wheel? That's the question many are asking, after a Charlotte County school bus driver died Thursday morning. Phyllis Pollard crashed on Route 40 with 32 students on board. State Police think she may have had a medical emergency.
Students say she seemed to pass out just before the bus went off the road.
Brenda Vassar, Heard the Crash - "I heard a loud boom, just like an explosion."
Brenda Vassar looked out her window and saw the scene. A school bus crashed into a tree on the side of Route 40.
Vassar - "The children, students, were already starting to get out of the back door."
32 students were on their way to Central Middle School. Seven had minor injuries, but their bus driver, 57-year-old Phyllis Pollard, didn't make it.
Melody Hackney, Superintendent - "There are no words. It's absolutely overwhelming."
Superintendent Melody Hackney says the experience was scary enough. Now, students are dealing with the loss of a friend.
Hackney - "Mrs. Pollard was a very loved school bus driver who had been here for a number of years."
Eight years driving the same route, only for it to end like this. Pollard's husband is a deputy in Charlotte County. The school system says they will be honoring her and helping students get through this. Already some don't want to ride another bus. State Police are waiting to find out what happened to Pollard before the crash.
