Controversy is brewing over a campaign ad placed in the Roanoke Times by a group associated with city councilman Brian Wishneff. At the bottom of the full page ad targeting one of Wishneff's opponents, Court Rosen, it lists the buyer as Joe Smith with Citizens for Sensible Decisions.
That Joe Smith turned out to be Wishneff, who says a Times advertising representative told him he could make up a name to place in the ad.
Brian Wishneff, Roanoke Councilman - "It's a complete fabrication that we purposely tried to slip by anybody the name of Joe Smith, it just could not be further from the truth."
The Roanoke Times tells us that all political advertisements require the name of the group and a member's name. A spokesperson with the State Board of Elections tells us, Citizens for Sensible Decisions is not registered as a political action committee and a candidate's name must be on the ad if he or she benefits from it.
