A federal grand jury in Roanoke has indicted a Guatemala man on charges of transporting illegal aliens. The U.S. Attorney says 24 year old Pedro Antonio Antonio Mateo was in this country illegally.
According to the indictment, Mateo was transporting seven men in a Suburban on I-81 last month, when a state trooper pulled him over for a traffic stop. That's when the trooper discovered the group of men, and called Immigration and Customs to investigate, and found they were illegal aliens. The indictment alleges that Mateo was moving them for financial gain.
If convicted he faces up to 10 years in prison and/or a $250,000 fine.
