It is confirmed -- at least two tornadoes touched down in our area, one in Franklin and Henry Counties, and in Pittsylvania County. Now, people there are left to clean up the mess. Neighbors in southeastern Franklin County say it hit around 8:00 Thursday night and left a path of destruction about a mile long.
Massive trees, some snapped right at the base, fell on top of one house. Derik Stoneman was inside. He says it took just 15 minutes to do all this damage.
Derik Stoneman, Saw the Tornado - "It was a black funnel and there was other debris in it, flying around. Mostly trees. I mean, whole trees! 60-foot tall trees just flying in the air! It was the craziest thing I ever saw!!"
The National Weather Service (web|news) believes this was an EF-1 tornado with winds of 86-to-95 miles per hour. Officials also confirmed that a tornado touched down in Pittsylvania County, near Gretna.
