Authorities say the man accused of shooting two campers on the Appalachian Trail earlier this week- has died. The Giles County Sheriff’s Office says 54-year-old Randall Lee Smith was found unresponsive in his New River Valley jail cell around five Saturday.
Emergency workers took him to the hospital- where he was pronounced dead. He was the only one in that cell and authorities say they have no reason to suspect suicide.
He has been taken to the examiner's office for an autopsy. Smith was taken to a Roanoke hospital after the truck he was driving overturned on Tuesday.
Turns out, that truck was wanted in connection with the shooting of two people in Giles County earlier in the evening. In another twist, Smith was found guilty of murdering two hikers on the Appalachian Trial in 1981 and was released from prison in 1996.
