Farmville, VA - In Prince Edward County, two people were shot and killed outside a nightclub, and deputies say the shooter then tried to take his own life. It happened around 12:45 Monday morning at New Fever's, just outside the Farmville town limits.

46-year-old Sheila Anderson Carter of Pamplin and 35-year-old Mandel Brandon Jones of Dillwyn are dead. Investigators say the shooter knew one of the victims very well. The suspect is 52-year-old John Thomas Carter, Sheila's husband.

He's in critical, but stable condition, but trouble at New Fever's is nothing new for police. Deputies have dealt with gunshots and fights here before, but Captain Wesley Reed of the Prince Edward County Sheriff's Office isn't used to this.

"It's a domestic situation that got bad," Reed said.

Deputies say Sheila Carter and Mandel Jones left New Fever's early Monday morning. They say the suspect, and Sheila's husband John Thomas Carter was waiting for them right outside in the parking lot. Reed says Carter pulled a handgun, and shot his wife and Jones multiple times killing them.

"Mr. Carter eventually turned a 12 gauge shotgun on himself, causing a self-inflicted wound to the head area," Reed said.

He survived, and was taken to the hospital. Deputies say they're waiting on charges from the Commonwealth's Attorney.

Some of the club's neighbors in nearby Parc Crest want a new neighbor. "It's gotten to be really out of hand up there," Glenda Stimpson said.

Glenda Stimpson says she always hears New Fever's loud music. The club's only a hundred yards away, and the shooting has her on edge. "I don't feel safe," she said.

Dieane Long and Gene West say Saturdays, with the younger crowds, can be a little rough, but not Sundays. Dieane Long, who goes to New Fever's, said, "It's Oldie But Goodie Night. There's nothing but old people there."

Gene West, who also goes to New Fever's, added, "Usually there's nothing more than a vocal squabble, and that's about it."

Deputies say Sheila Carter is survived by three adult children.
