Campbell Co., VA - We've told you many times about ongoing economic struggles of the automobile industry. As it turns out, at least one automotive sector is thriving. Area salvage yards say business is booming, mainly because more people are willing to put in extra work to save a few bucks.
Richard Harvey came looking for a radiator coolant reservoir for a Dodge pickup. And he found it. "This place is a really great place, everything is easy to get to." He continued, "Normally, this thing will run around about $90 and here it's probably about $30."
You get the same story from all these bargain hunters.
Larry Logan, came up from Altavista. He said, "This piece I got right here, most people would probably charge you $50, where you can get it here for $25."
There is a catch though. You must search for and remove all of the parts yourself, so your hands will get dirty. Workers at Cunningham Brother's Pick & Save say most don't care.
Seth Bigham at Cunningham Brother's Auto Park said, "It saves them a lot of money, about half to three-quarters percent of what they would spend if they were to go to the dealership." He continued, "We offer wheelbarrows, we offer wheel carts, we offer chain hoists, pretty much anything they would need to get the part off."
You will have to provide your own wrenches or ratchets. And to harvest bigger parts, you'll need to supply the man power to lift them. "It is well worth the effort," Harvey said.
Recovering parts from a salvage yard can be dangerous. You must be 18 or over to do it and they require you sign a waiver.
