Buchanan, VA - For the past eight years, 94.9, "Star Country", has been challenging area high schools to come up with the most toys for the "Toys for Tots" program. This year more than 50 schools accepted the challenge, and for the second straight year, James River High in Buchanan won.
Their prize is a concert by big time "dancing" star and country music singer Chuck Wicks. Some say the greatest reward in life is giving.
Student Jennifer Stull said, "You know that you're not volunteering for some random purpose. You know that kids are going to enjoy this and someone really cares about them."
And sometimes the gift of giving isn't the only reward you will earn. The students are very excited. But Thursday the focus is on Wicks- fresh off a stint on "Dancing With the Stars".
"I had the time of my life but it's time to refocus and get back to doing what I love, which is country music," Wicks said.
So now Wicks is on a make up tour of sorts. That's because he and his band had to clear their concert schedule for three months to do "Dancing With the Stars."
"It's so cool to come to this school because they stepped out of their way to give Toys for Tots... they went out of their way to do something nice. It's easy for me to come in a sing them some songs and have fun with them. They deserve it." Wicks said.
That's because for every one of these kids, more than two toys went to Toys for Tots-1,100 in all.
" I don't know If I'd call me the payback, but here I am!" Wicks said.
Wicks and his band flew in from California just for this show, then they flew right back to make up some dates on the west coast.
