Chatham, VA - A 60-year-old Chatham man has been living in a tool shed for four months. Now, he might have a chance to move out. Melvin Hodnett's home was destroyed in a fire back in January.

He didn't have insurance and he didn't want to give up his property so he stayed in the shed behind his house. The Chatham Baptist Church is coming forward to help him rebuild. They've raised some money and gathered some volunteers, but they're still looking for more to join in the cause.

Melvin Hodnett loves to garden. It's the reason he refuses to move. So, he lives without running water, electricity or plumbing in a small tool shed.

Pastor Warnock of Chatham Baptist Church said, "No one should live in inadequate housing anywhere much less in a community where we can do something about it."

His house was destroyed in a fire back in January.  "It could've been worse, some people have gone through worser things," Hodnett said.

You wouldn't want to walk in his shoes. He uses a generator for electricity, cooks using a steel grate, and the restroom, well, he doesn't have one. "I'm a type of person I don't ask for a whole lot I always try to do things myself,” Hodnett said.

But Melvin needs help - and he says he's getting it from above.  "He's our neighbor I mean he lives right around the corner from us almost and he needs help," Warnock said.

Pastor Charles Warnock says it's going to be a big job. But for someone as kind as Melvin, the Pastor and his congregation are happy to help.

"He said I'm growing some greens in my garden he said if that comes in he said I'll bring some so you can give them to somebody who needs them more than I do," Hodnett said.

Even though the pastor can't think of anyone who'd need it more, he knows he's just planting the seed for another good deed.
"If there's ever anything I can do to help anybody I'd be glad to just feel free to ask," Hodnett said.

They hope to finish fixing up the home by the end of June. If you're interested in helping out, call Chatham Baptist Church at 434-432-8003.
