Danville, VA - A Pepsi Company distribution center in Wytheville is no longer donating to God's Pit Crew. The reason is because the organization has the word "God" in their name. It's making residents pretty upset. The crew says the donations stopped a few weeks ago without reason and those that know how hard the crew works are furious.
God's Pit Crew - a faith based disaster relief organization- says Pepsi Company will no longer donate products to their cause.
Randy Johnson, with God's Pit Crew, said, "We don't know what the reason is it would be great if we did know we would like to know the answer."
In the past, the Wytheville distribution center has given close to 18 tractor trailer loads of Gatorade. For them to suddenly stop - didn't make sense.
“If the relationship was nothing less than perfect as we've been told then we'd like to know why they did," Johnson said.
Officials at the plant gave a reason. They say it's because of the organization's name- GOD's pit crew.
"Taking it away because it has the word God in it they're just doing that to be mean. The disaster victims really need the help and I think it's wrong for them to do that just because its got the word God in it," area resident Jennifer Hughes said.
Plant officials say there are policies surrounding giving to a specific religious organization, and they say the crew does give to churches.
"We make absolutely no excuses for being a faith based, a religious based organization - we don't discriminate we help those in need whether they're believers or non believers," Johnson said.
Now, the crew is just hoping to get help from somewhere else. Officials at the distribution center say they're reviewing their policies and will try to resume donations to the crew as soon as they can.
