Shaquille O'Neal backlash has reached our area. This week, the Maricopa County, Arizona, Sheriff pulled Shaq's badges after he performed a profanity-laced rap in New York. Wednesday, he lost the endorsement of the Bedford County Sheriff's Office, as well.
Sheriff Mike Brown says he's disappointed in O'Neal. Especially since Bedford County was one of the first departments to make Shaq a reserve deputy and use him as a national spokesperson. All of that came to an end.
Sheriff Mike Brown, Bedford County - "At this point, we have severed our relationships with him."
The controversy all started from a video, now a hit on YouTube. In the now notorious rap, O'Neal uses profanity and several racial slurs while talking about Laker's star Kobe Bryant.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Maricopa County, Arizona - "But I don't want my badge to be connected with this type of activity. Sometimes you have to use some common sense if you are a role model and if you are involved in law enforcement."
As a reserve officer in Bedford County, O'Neal was not reappointed to his position this year, because he wasn't able to make it to the ceremony. But he was still a major figure in the department's Blue Ridge Thunder initiative, which hunts online child predators. Sheriff Brown has already asked him to return his badge.
Sheriff Brown - "We can't have it and we won't, we wouldn't have it from one of our regular deputies and you know we can't accept it from a reserve."
Shaq's image has already been removed from the Blue Ridge Thunder website. And his likeness will no longer be used to promote the work that he cared so much about.
Sheriff Brown - "I hope people remember that also, in addition to this mistake that he made."
Shaq's uniform & firearm are still in storage at the Bedford County Sheriff's Office. The handgun will eventually be given to another deputy, but the Sheriff doesn't think anyone else will fit in Shaq's old uniform.
