A 500-million year old fossil has been unearthed in our area. The two-ton stromatolite head was found about a month ago at the Boxley Blue Ridge Quarry. Stromatolites still exist today, but they're not as prevalent as they once were.
They're found in shallow, tidal environments. This rare find was discovered about 250 feet below the Earth's surface -- fully intact.
Dr. Alton Dooley, Virginia Museum of Natural History - "When I first received an e-mail saying we needed to come up and look up at a stromatolite fossil, I wasn't terribly excited. That's what we do, but there's stromatolites around. So we didn't really expect a whole lot. But when we got up here and saw the thing, we were blown away."
Boxley has donated the stromatolite to the Virginia Museum of Natural History in Martinsville. Researchers say this is the first intact stromatolite head found in Virginia.
