Amherst Co., VA - No more secrets- that's the message coming from Amherst County Supervisors. Board members say they are tired of accusations about secret meetings, which came up after Rodney Taylor resigned as county administrator.
They've already dramatically changed the way they do business, and they've started by discussing almost everything in open session.
The board even voted to discuss in detail why Rodney Taylor was asked to resign. It will be brought up at the next meeting on June 10th.
That meeting was scheduled to take place at Sweet Briar
(web) College. They've now moved it back to the council chambers so that anyone in the county can attend. It's another move to eliminate any perception of secrecy.
Amherst County Supervisor Ray Vandall said, "It's going to be more transparent, and people are going to, if they care to know, they're going to know if they show up at the meetings."
Amherst County Supervisor Leon Parrish said, "We want to be transparent. I believe in transparent government. I was put here by the people and I want the people to know exactly what's going on. I have nothing to hide."
The board also voted to begin an investigation into the leaked information of a criminal case against a county employee. The former administrator says he notified the board and one of them let the word out. They're considering bringing in the State Police.
