Amherst Co., VA - Amherst County's Sheriff says the man who tried to get away from deputies- by jumping into the James River Tuesday- is now facing a charge of preventing an officer from making an arrest.
William Slusser is being held on no bond. He was wanted on an outstanding warrant in Halifax County for violating probation on a grand larceny conviction.
When deputies went to arrest him on Tuesday, he jumped over a guardrail and went into the water.
Sheriff Ayers tells us his deputies did an outstanding job in an unusual situation. "Its a tough job but in this particular situation they infiltratied the area with additional personnel and covering until we can get extra boats here, and persistence paid off," Ayers said.
Police were eventually able to coax Slusser onto a boat and into custody.
