South Boston, VA - An eight-year-old girl is fighting for her life. South Boston resident Caroline Laughorn was diagnosed with Leukemia about a month ago. Now, her community is coming together to help her and her family.
This little girl has gone through quite a lot the past few weeks, but her parents say out of the entire family, she's dealing with it the best.
"Hi my name is Caroline Paige Laughhorn. I'm in the hospital at Duke. I have Leukemia. I'm very, very, very sick."
Caroline wrote this letter to all her family and friends, so they'd know how she was doing. She wasn't always so sick.
Craig Laughorn, Caroline's father, said, "She was perfectly healthy one night and went to bed..."
When she woke up, her legs were hurting a lot. Her parents took her to the doctor and one week later, she was diagnosed.
Jennifer Laughorn, Caroline's mother, said, "Not my child, I mean you just don't think anything like that can happen to your child."
Soon, Caroline will lose her hair. Then she'll lose her energy. The road to recovery looks long and painful.
"She tries to comfort us, when I go to cry and she'll say momma please don't cry stop for me and I try not to do that in front of her, but sometimes it's hard," Jennifer said.
Caroline is determined to get well. She's even made a commercial about an upcoming fundraiser. And the community is right behind her - pushing her forward.
"Gifts and thoughts and prayers and visits and phone calls and people we don't even know that will have brought things… it’s just amazing, its amazing,” Jennifer said.
Caroline appreciates it all. But what she really wants is just a small favor.
"Please keep praying for me," Caroline said.
The Southside Baptist Church will hold a car wash fundraiser for Caroline this Saturday. It'll go on from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Autozone in South Boston.
