Amherst Co., VA - Amherst County deputies say the man arrested Tuesday in the James River originally said he'd rather die, than go back to jail.
They say William Slusser ran from them after a routine traffic stop. He eventually had to be fished out of the James River.
He was wanted on an outstanding warrant in Halifax County for violating probation on a grand larceny conviction.
One of the deputies in the boat calls it one of the craziest arrests he been apart of.
Lt. Danny Gowen with the Amherst County Sheriff's Office said, "It's way up there, I gotta tell you. For somebody to run, I can see you running cause you are scared but to run and jump in the river and be in the water as long as he was, it's pretty crazy."
Slusser was in the water about an hour. He's being held on no bond. Slusser now faces an additional charge of preventing an officer from making an arrest.
