Beyer, a car dealer and businessman in northern Virginia, was one of Obama's earliest and most active advocates in Virginia.
Obama dominated the state's Democratic primary in February 2008 and last fall became the first Democrat to carry the state in a presidential race since Lyndon Johnson in 1964.
In addition to his duties in Switzerland, Beyer also will serve as ambassador to the principality of Liechtenstein.
After serving two terms as lieutenant governor beginning in 1989, Beyer lost the 1997 governor's race to Republican Jim Gilmore.
