Amherst Co., VA - We now know that an investigation into an alleged sex crime is what led former Amherst County Administrator Rodney Taylor to resign.
The county's Economic Development Director- John Mulvey- is charged with child molestation.
County officials have confirmed this case and leaked information surrounding it. This all started in March when Amherst Police began investigating the attempted aggravated sexual battery of a young child.
Out of courtesy, the police chief told Taylor they were investigating Mulvey. Taylor told the Board of Supervisors and somewhere, the information leaked out.
The board has begun their own investigation to find out where the leak came from. Supervisors tell us Taylor was asked to resign after he accused one of the supervisors of spreading the news.
Investigators believe Mulvey was tipped off, but they say the political backlash hasn't caused any problems.
Inv. Ben Placer with the Amherst Police Department said, “It hasn't affected my case in any way, I've just, my concern the whole time has been for the victim in this case and I've trudged forward with the ciminal investigation part and left that part for other people to deal with."
Mulvey remains in jail. His bond hearing is set for Monday. As for his position with the county, Mulvey will stay on administrative leave until the board decides otherwise.
