Gladys, VA -
Campers say a crackdown on drinking and rowdy behavior at the Fun Float festival in Campbell County is turning people away. The Campbell County Sheriff's Office says they won't tolerate any alcohol at this weekend's festival. For 33 years, people have put-in at Long Island Park and floated down the Staunton River to Brookneal. Last year deputies say there was too much drinking leading to public nudity and a drowning. This year nearly 30 officers from multiple agencies are trying to put a stop to the drinking. As a result, campers say fewer people showed up.
Buddy Faulkner, Fun Float Fan - "I've been here when there were ten thousand people. This place was covered. You could've walked shore to shore and never touched the water with all the boats. I woke up this morning I bet there wasn't a hundred people here."
Capt. Kevin Schmitt, Campbell County Sheriff's Office - "It's sad to say, but it appears that due to increased enforcement, that the people chose not to show up."
Campbell County deputies say so far they've written five citations for alcohol use this weekend.
