Beginning Tuesday, the Lynchburg Landfill is officially a Regional Landfill. The new title means it will accept an extra 150 tons of garbage a day. That trash from Bedford, Appomattox County and Campbell County had previously gone to the landfill in Rustburg, before it shut down Monday.
This doesn't mean people who live in Campbell County will have to drive to Lynchburg. The Rustburg Landfill will still take garbage from residents, and bring it to Lynchburg. We're told it will take 5 to 7 years before the Lynchburg landfill is full. When that happens, the Regional landfill will then move back to Rustburg for another 8 to 10 years.
The partnership is expected to save millions in operational costs for the localities involved. And people we spoke with don't seem to mind the change.
George Johnson, Appomattox County Public Works - "I think it is a little better because you got a straight stretch, you don't have to go through the town of Rustburg so it makes it a little bit better."
Clarke Gibson, Solid Waste Director - "The citizens will also see a benefit, we've increased their monthly free tonage, free poundage to 500 pounds a month from 250 pounds."
There are drawbacks, mainly for the public works departments in Brookneal and Altavista. Each will have to drive their towns' trash to Lynchburg. That's about an extra 30-miles per trip, at least 2,500 extra miles driven each year.
